Vice President Andreas Schmidt
Andreas Schmidt is a native Californian, raised in the central valley town of Escalon. He served in the Army as a radar operator and spent his enlistment watching for defectors into West Germany from the Czech Republic. After leaving the military, Andreas studied psychology and formed a life serving those who are disenfranchised and disadvantaged. While he found this profession rewarding, he decided to study photography and ended up traveling around the world to photograph people in their natural environments. Today Andreas is back in social services and continues to work on issues related to the underserved in our society. He has been on several boards that address issues such as affordable housing, individual rights, and personal empowerment. Andreas has lived in the bay area since 1982 and in Vallejo the last 10 years.

Secretary Leo Gasteiger
Leo Gasteiger moved to Vallejo in 1989 and attended Farragut Elementary School. After graduating from Vallejo Senior High School, he moved to Sacramento and attended Sacramento State. Upon graduating with a Bachelor’s in computer science in 2006, he worked for the State of California, at various agencies, for about five years. In 2011, he moved to Daly City and began his career in Silicon Valley, working for various technology companies. Since many of these technology companies had numerous offices throughout the U.S., Leo often had to travel 80% of the time. After getting “burned-out”, he decided to leave private industry and head back to government. When he moved back to Vallejo, he started employment with the City and County of San Francisco. Leo totally loves the Bay Area!!! He’s decided that he’ll be staying closer to home and definitely not be traveling for work any longer.

Treasurer Elaine Paurel
Elaine brings a knowledge of Excel spreadsheets in assuming the important position of Treasurer for the VHNA. She helped plant the VHNA flower/succulent garden at Sheveland Park and volunteers for clean up days at the Park and in Vallejo Heights. Elaine brings delicious cookies for the monthly VHNA meetings, and also Sabrina (a VHNA honorary member who also happens to be a beautiful Siberian Husky). Sabrina always signals the start of VHNA meetings.

At Large Yolanda Thruston
Yolanda Thruston moved to Vallejo two years ago and is still exploring the city. In the 1990s she worked for a while at a local Vallejo firm, during which time she found Vallejo to have a somewhat “funky feel” and the people diverse and pleasant. When Yolanda lived in Alameda she participated in several local grass roots organizations, so agreeing to serve on the VHNA Board of Directors was an easy decision for her to make.

  Sandra Lee
Sandra Lee has lived in Vallejo Heights since 1978 and has been a member of the VHNA. She was raised on a large ranch in central California. She graduated from UC Davis with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She worked to help US combat troops, in the field and in evacuation hospitals, in South Vietnam. Returning to the US, she obtained a Masters in Social Work degree, with a concentration of Social Justice and Corrections. From 1984 to 2012 she worked in the Vallejo Kaiser Hospice Department providing end of life support and aid to patients and their families. In 1991 she started a private psychotherapy practice; her office is in Benicia, California.
